Dermatologist Faves! My Top Skincare Ingredients

Beauty TipsOctober 18, 20255 min read

Want a dermatologist-approved skincare routine? I'm sharing the ingredients that *actually* work, according to the experts (and me!).

Okay, besties, let's talk skincare. Autumn's officially here, and with the colder weather creeping in, it's time to switch up our routines. I've been doing a little (okay, a lot) of research, and I'm sharing my dermatologist-approved favourite skincare ingredients for 2024. I wasted money on so many things to find these.

Trust me, I've tried everything. From the weird TikTok hacks (more on that later!) to the super expensive serums at Space NK, I’ve put my face through the wringer. So, when I say these ingredients are good, I mean it.

The Dermatologist's Dream Team

So, what are the ingredients that dermatologists actually rave about? These aren't just trendy – they're backed by science and years of research. Let's get started!

1. Retinoids: The Anti-Ageing Rockstar

Okay, let’s get the big guns out first. Retinoids! If there’s one ingredient dermatologists consistently recommend, it's this. They're basically vitamin A derivatives, and they work wonders for everything from acne to fine lines. Seriously, everything.

I started using a retinol serum about two years ago, and honestly, it's made a huge difference. My skin is smoother, brighter, and those pesky fine lines around my eyes? Noticeably reduced. I use the No7 Advanced Retinol Complex Night Concentrate (available at Boots, of course!). It's a great starting point if you're new to retinoids. Just remember to start slow – once or twice a week – and always wear SPF during the day. Trust me on this one; you do not want to skip the SPF. This didn't work for me at first, but I persisted.

2. Vitamin C: Brighten Up, Buttercup!

Vitamin C is my absolute favourite for brightening dull skin. Especially during these grey autumn days. It's amazing! It's a potent antioxidant, meaning it protects your skin from environmental damage (think pollution, UV rays, all that fun stuff). Plus, it boosts collagen production, which keeps your skin looking plump and youthful. Yes, please!

I've been using the Boots Vitamin C Brightening Booster for a few months now, and I'm obsessed. It's affordable, effective, and gives my skin a lovely glow. Here's what worked for me: apply it in the morning before your moisturiser and SPF.

3. Hyaluronic Acid: Hydration Hero

If you've been following my blog, you'll know I'm a huge advocate for hydration, especially as we transition into autumn. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the air into your skin. It's like a big drink of water for your face!

I've been obsessed with the Skin Flooding trend lately, and it's seriously saved my dry autumn skin! Check out my post Skin Flooding? It Saved My Dry Autumn Skin! for all the details. My go-to hyaluronic acid serum is The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. It's super affordable and works a treat. I've found it really helps.

4. Ceramides: The Skin Barrier Saviour

Ceramides are lipids (fats) that naturally occur in your skin. They play a crucial role in maintaining your skin barrier, which is essential for keeping moisture in and irritants out. Think of them as the mortar that holds your skin cells together.

If your skin is feeling dry, irritated, or sensitive, ceramides are your best friend. I love the CeraVe Moisturising Cream – it's packed with ceramides and is super gentle on the skin. You can find it at pretty much any high street chemist. It's a lifesaver.

5. Niacinamide: The Multi-Tasker

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a total multi-tasker. It helps to reduce redness, minimise pores, regulate oil production, and improve skin tone. What can't it do?

I started using a niacinamide serum to help with some redness I was experiencing (thanks, British weather!), and it's made a noticeable difference. I use the Paula's Choice 10% Niacinamide Booster – it's a bit pricey, but it's worth the investment, in my opinion. It's available at Cult Beauty.

My Autumn Skincare Routine: Putting It All Together

So, how do I incorporate these amazing ingredients into my autumn skincare routine? Here's a sneak peek:

* Morning:

* Cleanse with a gentle cleanser

* Apply Vitamin C serum

* Moisturise with a ceramide-rich cream

* Apply SPF (always!)

* Evening:

* Double cleanse (especially important if you wear makeup)

* Apply Retinol (a few times a week, alternating with niacinamide)

* Apply Hyaluronic Acid serum

* Moisturise with a rich cream

Don't Forget!

* Patch Test: Always patch test new products before applying them to your entire face. You don't want any nasty surprises!

* Listen to Your Skin: Pay attention to how your skin is reacting to different products and adjust your routine accordingly. What works for me might not work for you, and that's okay!

* Consistency is Key: Skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time to see results, so be patient and stick with it.

Final Thoughts

These are just a few of my dermatologist-approved favourite skincare ingredients for 2024. Remember, everyone's skin is different, so it's important to find what works best for you. But hopefully, this has given you a good starting point for building a routine that will keep your skin healthy and glowing all autumn long.

Happy skincare-ing, besties!

Love,
