Okay, besties, gather 'round! You know I'm all about sharing the real deal when it comes to beauty, and right now, I'm seriously excited about what's happening in hair care. It's not just about masking problems anymore; it's about treating them with amazing, well-formulated products. Forget those old-school shampoos – we're getting into scalp health and science-backed ingredients. So, grab a cuppa, and let's get into my top picks!
Scalp Skincare is Officially a Thing!
Remember when we only thought about skincare for our face? Well, those days are GONE. Your scalp is skin too! And a healthy scalp = healthy hair. Think of it like the foundation for your gorgeous locks. Rubbish soil, rubbish plant, right?
I've been experimenting with scalp scrubs, serums, and masks like crazy, and let me tell you, it's amazing. I tried The Ordinary's Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution on my scalp (yes, the toner!), leaving it on for 10 minutes before shampooing. It was a bit tingly, but afterwards my scalp felt so clean and refreshed. It's budget-friendly at around £8, which is always a win.
Now, I’m not saying go slather your entire face routine on your head. But incorporating specific scalp skincare products? Absolutely. I'm currently loving the Aveda Scalp Solutions range. It's a bit pricier, but the results are worth it – my scalp feels balanced, and I've noticed less itching and flakiness, especially as we head into the colder months. Plus, it smells amazing. You can find Aveda at most department stores like John Lewis or even online at Look Fantastic.
And just like with facial skincare, consistency is key. Don't expect miracles overnight! I try to exfoliate my scalp once a week and use a targeted serum a few times a week.
Speaking of skin, have you seen my My Acne-Prone Skin Routine for Autumn!? Some of those principles apply to the scalp too!
Hair Peptides: The New Hyaluronic Acid?
Okay, so we all know and love hyaluronic acid for its hydrating powers on our skin. But have you heard about peptides for hair? Peptides are basically building blocks of protein, and they can do wonders for strengthening and repairing damaged hair. I'm talking less breakage, more shine, and overall healthier-looking hair.
I've been using the BondiBoost Rapid Repair Serum which is packed with peptides, and I've noticed a huge difference in the strength of my hair. It feels thicker and less prone to snapping. I apply it to damp hair after washing, focusing on the ends. It's about £25 from Boots, so it's a mid-range option, but I think it's worth the investment.
There are tons of peptide-infused products popping up everywhere – from shampoos and conditioners to leave-in treatments. Keep an eye out for them when you're browsing the aisles at Superdrug or Cult Beauty. They're definitely worth a try!
Gentle Cleansing is Queen
I used to think that a good shampoo had to be super sudsy to be effective. Boy, was I wrong! Harsh sulfates can strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, leaving them dry, brittle, and irritated. Now, I'm all about gentle cleansing – think sulfate-free shampoos and co-washing (washing your hair with conditioner only).
I’ve had a lot of luck with the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo. It's sulfate-free and leaves my hair feeling clean but not stripped. It's a bit of a splurge at around £30, but a little goes a long way. Plus, it smells divine. Another great option is the Noughty Wave Hello Curl Defining Shampoo. It's sulphate, paraben and silicone free, and it's a great budget friendly alternative, normally around £7. I've found both at Boots.
I also love co-washing once a week to give my hair a break from shampoo. I use the As I Am Coconut CoWash, which is super moisturising and leaves my curls feeling soft and defined. It's available at most Afro-Caribbean hair shops and online retailers like Look Fantastic.
Heat Protection is Non-Negotiable (Especially in Autumn!)
Okay, this isn't exactly a new trend, but it's worth repeating because it's so important! Heat styling can wreak havoc on your hair, especially as the weather starts to get colder and drier. Think of heat protection as your hair's bodyguard – it shields it from damage and keeps it looking healthy and shiny.
I always use a heat protectant before blow-drying, straightening, or curling my hair. My current favourite is the GHD Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray. It's lightweight, doesn't leave my hair feeling sticky, and provides excellent protection. You can grab it at most hair salons or department stores.
I made the mistake of skipping heat protectant last week when I was rushing to get ready, and I instantly regretted it. My hair felt dry and brittle afterwards, and I even noticed a few split ends. Lesson learned! Don't skip this step, ladies!
Multi-Masking for Hair?
If you're anything like me, you're probably a fan of multi-masking your face – using different masks on different areas to target specific concerns. Well, guess what? You can do the same for your hair!
For example, if you have oily roots and dry ends, you could use a clarifying mask on your scalp and a hydrating mask on your lengths. Or, if your hair is damaged from heat styling, you could use a protein mask on the damaged areas and a moisturising mask on the rest of your hair.
I tried this last month, using a clay mask on my roots to absorb excess oil and a deep conditioning mask on my ends to add moisture. It was a bit of a faff, but the results were amazing! My hair felt balanced, hydrated, and healthy.
I recommend experimenting with different masks to find what works best for your hair type and concerns. You can find a wide variety of hair masks at Boots, Superdrug, and online retailers like Feel Unique.
