Okay, so you know I'm always on the hunt for the next best thing in skincare, right? Well, stop the presses, because I think I’ve found it. I'm officially obsessed with skin cycling, and I’m here to tell you all about it! Especially with the weather getting colder, this routine's been a lifesaver for my skin. This autumn, it's all about giving your skin what it needs, when it needs it.
What is Skin Cycling?
Basically, skin cycling is a strategic approach to your skincare routine. Instead of bombarding your skin with actives every single night, you cycle through periods of using powerful treatments and then recover. Think of it like this: you don't run a marathon every day, do you? Your skin needs rest days too!
The typical cycle is four nights:
* Night 1: Exfoliate: Use a chemical exfoliant (like an AHA or BHA).
* Night 2: Retinoid: Apply your favourite retinol or prescription retinoid.
* Night 3 & 4: Recovery: Focus on hydration and moisturising.
Then, you repeat! Easy peasy.
Why I'm Hooked
I was initially skeptical. I thought, 'Surely, more is more, right?' Wrong! I was over-exfoliating and my skin was screaming at me. It was dry, irritated, and I was even breaking out (the horror!). A friend mentioned skin cycling, and I thought I'd give it a go. I'm SO glad I did! Honestly, my skin's never looked better.
My Skin Cycling Routine (Autumn Edition!)
Here's what my current skin cycling routine looks like, now we're heading into fall and my skin needs extra TLC:
Night 1: Exfoliation
I cleanse with a gentle cleanser (currently loving the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish – it's a classic for a reason!). Then, I use a chemical exfoliant. I've been using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution. It's budget-friendly at under £10 and really effective. I sweep it over my face with a cotton pad, avoiding my eye area.
Night 2: Retinoid
After cleansing, I wait about 20 minutes for my skin to dry completely. This is crucial to minimise irritation. Then, I apply a pea-sized amount of my retinoid. I use the No7 Advanced Retinol Complex – it's a great option you can pick up easily at Boots. If you're new to retinoids, start slow! You can even buffer it by applying a moisturiser before the retinoid.
Night 3 & 4: Recovery
These nights are all about hydration, hydration, hydration! I cleanse, then I layer on a hydrating serum. I'm obsessed with the La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Hyaluronic Acid Serum. It's pricey, but worth every penny. Then, I slather on a rich moisturiser. The CeraVe Moisturising Cream is my go-to. It’s simple, effective, and doesn’t break the bank.
Sometimes on recovery nights I'll even do a little skin flooding, which, if you've not tried it, is amazing! Check out my post on Skin Flooding? My New Obsession For Autumn! for all the details.
My Top Tips for Skin Cycling Success
* Listen to Your Skin: If your skin feels irritated, scale back. Maybe do a 5-night cycle with 3 recovery nights. It's all about finding what works for you.
* Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable: Especially when using exfoliants and retinoids, sunscreen is essential. Rain or shine, SPF every single day! Trust me on this.
* Don't Forget Your Neck & Décolletage: Extend your skincare routine down to your neck and chest. They need love too!
* Be Patient: It takes time to see results. Stick with the routine for at least a few weeks before deciding if it's working for you.
* Choose the Right Actives: Consider your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, opt for gentler exfoliants like lactic acid instead of glycolic acid.
Adapting for Autumn
With the transition to colder weather, my skin definitely needs extra moisture. I make sure to use a richer moisturiser on my recovery nights. I also sometimes add a facial oil into the mix. I'm a big fan of the Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil. It's so nourishing and leaves my skin feeling amazing.
Is Skin Cycling Right for You?
Honestly? Probably! It’s a great way to simplify your routine and avoid overdoing it with harsh actives. It's especially good if you're prone to sensitivity or dryness.
Of course, if you have specific skin concerns (like acne or rosacea), it's always best to chat with a dermatologist or skincare professional.
