Bye Bye Redness My DIY Ceramide Rescue

SkincareOctober 14, 20256 min read

Sensitive skin driving you crazy? I'm sharing my simple DIY ceramide serum recipe that helped rebuild my skin barrier and calm redness. You've GOT to try this!

Okay, so you know when your skin just feels… angry? Red, itchy, easily irritated? Yeah, me too. It's the absolute worst, right? I’ve been battling sensitive skin for years, and honestly, sometimes it feels like a losing battle. But I've found something that's actually working, and I'm dying to share it with you. Get ready for my DIY ceramide rescue!

My Skin Barrier Nightmare

For ages, I just assumed I had naturally sensitive skin. I tried all the fancy creams, the gentle cleansers, the whole shebang. Some things helped a bit, but nothing really tackled what was going on. Then, I stumbled upon a blog post talking about the skin barrier. Lightbulb moment!

Turns out, all that harsh scrubbing, over-exfoliating (oops!), and even just the cold weather can damage your skin's natural protective layer. And a damaged skin barrier? Well, that's basically an open invitation for redness, irritation, and sensitivity. Sound familiar? I realised I was probably making things worse without even realising it! I was stripping away the natural oils and goodness that my skin desperately needed. So, I started doing some research and found that ceramides are like the bricks and mortar that hold your skin barrier together.

Ceramides to the Rescue!

Ceramides are lipids (fats) that naturally occur in your skin. They help to keep moisture in and irritants out. When your skin barrier is damaged, it loses ceramides, leading to dryness, sensitivity, and all those other lovely symptoms we know and loathe.

Now, you can buy ceramide creams and serums, and many of them are great. But I'm a bit of a DIY queen (and let's be honest, sometimes those products can be pricey!). So, I decided to try making my own ceramide serum.

My DIY Ceramide Serum Recipe (That Actually Works!)

Okay, here's the recipe I've been using for the past few weeks. I'm not gonna lie, it took a bit of tweaking to get it just right, but now I'm obsessed!

What you'll need:

* Ceramide Complex: This is the star of the show! I use a concentrated ceramide complex from a reputable supplier. Look for one that contains a blend of different ceramides (like ceramide NP, AP, EOP). I've been using one from Garden of Wisdom and I’m loving it.

* Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture to the skin. It's perfect for hydrating and plumping. I love The Ordinary's Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. It's affordable and effective.

* Squalane Oil: Squalane is a light, non-comedogenic oil that mimics your skin's natural sebum. It helps to moisturise and protect the skin barrier. I use the one from Biossance, but any good quality squalane oil will do.

* Optional: Centella Asiatica Extract: This is a soothing ingredient that can help to calm redness and irritation. If you have super sensitive skin, it's a great addition. I add a few drops of the one from iUNIK.

* A clean, dark glass bottle with a dropper: This is important to protect the serum from light and air.

Instructions:

  • In your clean glass bottle, combine 1 tablespoon of hyaluronic acid serum.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon of ceramide complex.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of squalane oil.
  • If using, add 3-5 drops of centella asiatica extract.
  • Close the bottle tightly and shake gently to combine.
  • How to use:

  • After cleansing and toning, apply a few drops of the serum to your face and neck.
  • Gently pat the serum into your skin until it's fully absorbed.
  • Follow with your favourite moisturiser.
  • Important Notes:

    * Always do a patch test before applying the serum to your entire face, especially if you have sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to see if you have any reaction.

    * Store the serum in a cool, dark place to protect it from light and air.

    * This serum should last for about 2-3 months.

    * Adjust the amounts of each ingredient to suit your skin's needs. If your skin is very dry, you might want to add more squalane oil.

    My Experience & Tips

Okay, so here's the honest truth. This didn't work for me at first! I think I was too heavy-handed with the ceramide complex. My skin felt a little bit clogged. So, I scaled it back to the amount I mentioned above, and bam! Magic.

I use this serum every night before bed, and I've noticed a HUGE difference in my skin. My redness has calmed down significantly, my skin feels more hydrated and plump, and I'm not getting nearly as many breakouts. It's honestly been a life-saver! Before this, I was using a Vitamin C serum to help brighten my skin.

Here are a few extra tips that have helped me:

    * Simplify your skincare routine: When your skin barrier is damaged, less is more. Stick to gentle cleansers, hydrating serums, and a good moisturiser. Avoid harsh exfoliants and active ingredients until your skin has healed.

    * Use sunscreen every day: Sun damage can further weaken your skin barrier. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even when it's cloudy.

    * Be patient: It takes time for your skin barrier to heal. Don't expect to see results overnight. Be consistent with your skincare routine and give it a few weeks to work.

    Other Things That Helped

I also realised that some of my habits were contributing to my skin sensitivity. I was washing my face too often, using water that was too hot, and not drinking enough water. Simple changes like washing my face only once a day with lukewarm water and drinking more water made a big difference.

I also started paying more attention to the ingredients in my other skincare products. I avoided products with harsh chemicals, fragrances, and alcohol.

If you are curious about your skin, you may want to get it tested. I recently had my skin tested and wrote about it in this post: My Skin is Glowing Thanks to This Test!

    Winter Skincare Saviours

As winter approaches (especially here in the northern hemisphere!), our skin faces even more challenges. The cold air and dry indoor heating can really wreak havoc on our skin barrier. This DIY ceramide serum has been my absolute saviour.

Honestly, I'm so excited to have finally found something that's truly helping my sensitive skin. I really hope this DIY ceramide serum works for you too! Let me know in the comments if you try it, and what your favourite skin barrier repair tips are! Happy skin-caring!
